Are You On The Move?

It seems many of my clients have moving on their minds.  The husband has been transferred.  The wife has accepted a promotion.  The retirees are about to enact their plans for their long-awaited sea change (I must insert here that my husband is extremely jealous of this couple).  All of these people are in a great position when it comes to moving.  They all have time on their side to plan an organised move.

If you’re looking at moving here are a few tips that will help you on your way.

  • Start early.  Start working through your home, one room at a time, well before moving date.  Sort and purge so you only take what is important to you to your next home. There is absolutely no point paying to have clutter relocated from one property to another.  You could donate, sell or dump items well in advance. Sorting and decluttering is good for the soul.
  • Do your research.  Ask your friends, family or work colleagues for recommendations on removalist companies.  The good companies will put their quotes in writing so you know exactly what expenses you’re up for prior to moving day.  Never accept a verbal quote!  If you’re looking at moving over the Christmas/New Year period, be aware this is the removalists’ peak period, so book in quickly.
  • If you have children, remember to contact their current school to have school records transferred.
  • Moving can be tough on the whole family, but at least we’re able to understand what’s going on.  Our pets though – that’s another story.  Our pets can become extremely stressed when moving home.  Try to keep things as normal as possible for them i.e. walking & meal times.  If your fur babies have to be with you on moving day, I’d keep them confined to a secure room so they can’t escape or get hurt with all the activity in your home.  If you have a trusted friend or family available on moving day, I’d recommend they babysit your pets on moving day.
  • Don’t be a moving martyr.  You CAN do anything, but you don’t have to do EVERYTHING! Make sure you ask for help with this process.  There’s no point getting at the other end totally trashed.
