How much is too much?
Most of us know we have too much stuff. Too many clothes, too many pairs of shoes, too many plastic containers, with too many spare lids. I probably lean more towards a minimalistic lifestyle, but I know this doesn't work for everyone. If you're serious about enjoying more space with less clutter, these tips may help.
- Set up rules for discarding. These rules can be as individual as you are. One client I'm working with at the moment has agreed to discard anything that's broken or mismatched, while another has decided she'll only keep 3 pairs of flat black work shoes (she currently has 15 pairs all in different states of repair). Set the rules before you start sorting through your stuff and stick to them.
- Move the stuff out of your physical environment. It's never a great idea to keep plastic bags hanging around after you've been through the sorting process. Keep things moving out of your physical environment. Straight to the charity bin or rubbish bin I say!
- Rome wasn't built in a day. Start small and keep going. Even if you set aside 10 minutes a day, you will eventually work your way through. Slow and steady WILL win the race.
